The Secret to Success in Drawing 🤫

the Habit Loop

Drawing can feel intimidating, especially if you think you're not "artistic." But the key to success isn’t talent—it’s habit.

In The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg explains the cue-routine-reward loop:

  1. Cue: A trigger that reminds you to act.

  2. Routine: The action itself.

  3. Reward: The payoff that keeps you coming back.

How to Build Your Drawing Habit:

  • Start Small: Commit to just 5 minutes a day. That’s it!

  • Set a Trigger: Find a cue to draw, while you have your morning coffee, before you pick up your kids from school, or after your afternoon meeting.

  • Reward Yourself: Celebrate your daily practice—whether it’s with a simple check on your calendar or a moment of pride for showing up.

It’s not about being perfect, it’s about showing up consistently.

How will you apply the habit loop to your creative or drawing practice?

While motivation can be a great initial push, habits are what lead to lasting success because they’re more reliable and easier to maintain in the long run.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

3 Ways to Jumpstart Your Drawing Habit! āš”ļø

Weekly recap sketch of a memorable meal I enjoyed.

If you’re ready to make drawing a regular part of your life, here are three easy ways to jumpstart your habit:

  1. Visual Food Journal: Sketch one meal or grocery item each day. Keep it simple—like drawing a banana! šŸŒ

  2. 5-Minute Abstract Drill: Set a timer and draw random swirls, shapes, or lines. Explore what feels good without overthinking it.

  3. Weekly Sketch Recap: Capture a key moment or insight from your week—an event, a realization, or anything meaningful to you.

These habits boost your drawing skills while sharpening your thinking and communication. Additionally, it can bring more moments of joy into your day whether you’re drawing for your business or your life!
