Posting is Not Performance

Perfection kills creativity & one surreal insight

Hello, Visual Communicators! 👋

Welcome to the August issue of Learn Visual Communication, your monthly-ish reminder that seeing your thoughts and sharing your ideas visually is absolutely doable.

Ever get stuck in an endless loop of perfectionism? You’re not alone. In fact, it’s quite common, especially among high achievers.

In this issue:

  • 🧘 Mindful Design: Perfection Kills Creativity

  • 💡 Inspiration: A surreal quote that holds true

  • 🍅 Fresh Idea: Posting is not a performance

Let’s dive in!

🧘 Mindful Design

Perfectionism Kills Creativity. How to Break Free.

Round and Round We Go.

We’ve all been there. You sit down to create something: a newsletter, a social post, a visual for your business. It starts well… then you hear that little voice inside your head:

“This isn’t good enough. It needs to be perfect.”

Minutes turn into hours. Your lose energy. Eventually, you give up, frustrated and maybe a little defeated.

This isn’t just unhealthy - it can completely block your progress!

Perfectionism doesn’t make your work better; it traps your brain in stress mode, shutting down the very creativity you need.

⚙️ Understand How It Works

The Self‑Sabotage of Perfection.

To understand perfectionism, let’s take a peek at how creativity works.
Your brain has two gears for creativity:

  1. Focused Mode – problem-solving, editing, polishing

  2. Default Mode Network (DMN) – connecting ideas when you relax, drift, or daydream

Science tells us that highly creative people toggle between these modes, and ideas often surface in DMN moments, walking, showering, doodling.

When perfectionism kicks in, it locks you in Focused Mode too early.
You start editing and judging before the idea even exists.

And the result is…
you get stuck!

✏️ Practice Imperfection:

Practice imperfection to make progress.

If you lean toward perfectionism, try this Word-to-Visual Flip to reset your creative brain:

  1. Grab a scrap of paper

  2. Write down a random word - storm, cactus, freedom…

  3. Sketch the first image that pops into your head - no erasing, no editing

  4. Remember to enjoy the process (very important!)

  5. Repeat with 3 new words

Why it works:
Your brain shifts from Focused Mode (thinking in words) to Default Mode (thinking in pictures).

It’s playful, fast, and impossible to “get wrong.”

When you let go of perfect, ideas start to flow.

How did it feel? Could you feel the flip? Did your sketch surprise you in any way?

BONUS
If you’re feeling brave, hit reply and share your sketch with me.
It will go only to me - no one else will see it.

Think of this as a small, private step toward posting online.
Sharing your imperfect work, even with just one person, is how you start building the confidence to share it more widely later…

and begin truly communicating visually.

Have no fear of perfection–you’ll never reach it.

🍅 Fresh Ideas

Posting in Not A Performance

When I first started posting online, it felt like stepping onstage. 🎭
Every post felt like a presentation.

But over time, I learned something important:
Posting isn’t a performance - it’s a tool for connection.

Each post is simply an invitation:

  • to start a conversation

  • to connect with someone new

  • to practice sharing your ideas out loud

This week, try sharing one small, imperfect idea,
not for applause, but for connection.

What ideas are floating around your head that might benefit someone online? What is stopping you from posting it to connect, start a conversation or practice?

💭 Bring Your Ideas to Life

You don’t need to be “good at drawing” to use visuals in your work.
You just need a way to get ideas out of your head and into a form others can actually understand.

That’s what I help with - whether you’re sharing a post, leading a session, or explaining a big idea.

You just need the right mindset, some guidance, and a process that works for you.

That’s what I offer:

  • Coaching if you want to learn

  • A thinking partner if you want to collaborate

  • Design help if you need it done for you

Curious what might work best for you?
Reply anytime - I’d love to hear what you’re working on.
